“The first step - especially for young people with energy and drive and talent, but not money - the first step in controlling your world is to control your culture. To model and demonstrate the kind of world you demand to live in. To write the books. Make the music. Shoot the films. Paint the art.” -Chuck Palahniuk
Here is another contribution.
I believe that with a generation of learners growing up on YouTube, and with easy access to equipment, the best way to engage them is by adapting to their favored mediums. Art is something that has been taken out of too many classroom and is essential for the development of character. Even if one is not incredibly talented in the format, every student has something to offer within a project like this, whether it is script writing, directing, acting, filming, scoring music, or researching a topic. When students are given direction in technique, their natural desire to communicate via art can be aroused and reinforce any material being covered. It is a personalized and self-motivating project, because they get to democratically choose the topic they wish to cover, deciding from proposals that are within certain guidelines.
This is an example that I worked on when researching the OWS movement. I filmed the world wide Oct. 15th protest in Boston, MA and edited it to Keith Olberman reading the Occupy Wall Street manifesto. Take a look. Let me know what you think. I’d love any critique or advice from current or past teaching professionals.
